Biological Monitoring Consultants
Biological Monitoring · Biological Monitoring overview
UK biological monitoring consultants are typically chartered or qualified occupational hygienists (BOHS membership grades CertOH, MFOH, FFOH) who scope, deliver and interpret biomonitoring programmes for industrial duty-holders.
Scope of a consultant engagement
A standard scope covers exposure assessment review, SEG definition, biomarker selection, sampling strategy, laboratory selection and brief, on-site sample collection or training of site staff, statistical analysis of results and written interpretation against HSE BMGVs and ACGIH BEIs.
Competency expectations
Look for BOHS membership at CertOH or above; documented experience of the specific substance class (isocyanates, metals, solvents); familiarity with UKAS-accredited laboratories and external proficiency schemes; and the ability to integrate with the site's COSHH governance, not just deliver a report.
Deliverables to expect
Sampling strategy document, consent and information materials for workers, raw analytical results with chain of custody, cohort statistics and trend analysis where comparable data exists, and a written recommendation against documented review triggers.
