Cobalt Urine Testing
Heavy Metals · Heavy Metals overview
Urinary cobalt is the standard biomarker for occupational cobalt exposure in hard-metal (tungsten carbide/cobalt) manufacture and grinding, cobalt salt production, and lithium-ion battery cathode operations.
Hard-metal disease and the cobalt route
Cobalt sensitisation and hard-metal lung disease are the principal occupational concerns. Urinary cobalt is the established absorbed-dose marker; the inhalation route dominates in grinding and dry handling, with dermal uptake significant for soluble cobalt salts.
Reference value
HSE BMGV is 15 nmol/mmol creatinine for urinary cobalt, end-of-shift on the last day of a working week. ACGIH BEI is 15 µg/l (similar numerical level in different units).
Sectors monitored
Hard-metal tool manufacture and refurbishment, cobalt salt and pigment production, lithium-ion cathode powder handling, magnetic alloy production, and diamond-tool segment grinding.
